Pleasenote that the department has one accessible Windows PC that mightbe used for demonstration purposes only IF you bring along theproper software and the diskette used is known to be virus free.įamiliarize yourself with the power of Excel in both Physics and Mathematics by working with each of the following four examples: vector analysis, projectile motion, solving simultaneous quadratic equations graphically, and using the bisection method. Any spreadsheet software will do but you need tobe able to demonstrate the working of your spreadsheet. If you are more facile with another program, you mayuse that to create your spread sheet there is nothing sacredabout Excel. In the long run you'll spend a lot less time on thisproject. PLEASE, for your own sake, work through thetutorial. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Many students choose to skip working throughthe tutorial thinking that it will take no time at all to justbegin working successfully with this software. Additionally,you will use your spreadsheet skills to create a small grade bookprogram. The purpose of this project is two-fold:to provide you with a setting to explore physics that is not constrainedby the need to use advanced mathematics, and to introduce youto a powerful tool for exploring the world of physics. In this project you will learn howto use EXCEL as a tool to explore the behavior of physical phenomena.The nature of these explorations is sufficiently different fromnormal physics problems that you will encounter several surprisesand interesting twists. The word "investigate"is used here to convey the exploratory nature of the activities which you willencounter in this project. Spreadsheets will help you andyour students investigate phenomena in a way that is very differentfrom traditional problem solving. Using Excel Spreadsheets in Physics Teachingįor many candidate physics teachers spreadsheets are a newexperience in exploring physics.
